LOLA AND PULGUITA
The Red Ball
I am six years old. My name is Sam. I live in a small house with my mom and dad. We have a big yard with green grass and pretty flowers.
One day, I saw a red ball in our yard. It was round and very big. I did not know where it came from. The ball was under the old tree by our house.
"Mom, look at this!" I said. "There is a red ball here!"
My mom came out to see. She had on her blue dress. "That is a pretty ball," she said. "I think it came from next door. You should take it back."
I did not want to give the ball away. It was so pretty and red. I wanted to keep it and play with it. But mom said I must do the right thing.
I went to the house next door. A little girl came to see me. She had long brown hair and was about my age. Her name was Ann.
"Is this your ball?" I asked her.
"Yes!" she said. "Thank you! I was looking for it. I thought it was gone for good."
Ann was very happy. She gave me a big smile. "Do you want to play with me?" she asked.
I said yes. We went into her yard to play. The ball was fun to throw and catch. We would run and jump and laugh. Ann could throw the ball very far. I could catch it when she did.
We played for a long time. The sun was warm and yellow. There were white clouds in the blue sky. I was having so much fun with my new friend.
"I have to go eat now," I said when I got hungry.
"Will you come back and play again?" Ann asked.
"Yes, I will come back after I eat," I said.
I ran home fast. Mom had made me a good lunch. There was hot soup and cold milk. I ate it all up.
"Did you have fun with the little girl?" mom asked.
"Yes! Her name is Ann. She is very nice. Can I go play with her again?"
"Of course," mom said. "But first, help me wash these dishes."
I helped mom clean up. Then I ran back to Ann's house. She was waiting for me in her yard.
"Let's play a new game," she said. "We can ride our bikes around the yard."
Ann had a pretty bike. It was green with yellow flowers on it. I had my own bike too. It was blue and white.
We rode our bikes all around. We went fast and then slow. We rode in circles and made funny sounds. It was the best day ever.
When it got dark, I had to go home. "Thank you for playing with me," I told Ann.
"Thank you for bringing back my ball," she said. "You are a good friend."
I walked home with a big smile. Mom and dad were happy to see me.
"How was your day?" dad asked.
"It was the best day!" I said. "I made a new friend. Her name is Ann. We played with her red ball and rode our bikes."
"That sounds wonderful," mom said. "I am proud of you for doing the right thing with the ball."
That night, I went to sleep thinking about my new friend Ann. I could not wait to play with her again. Sometimes when you do the right thing, good things happen to you. I was so happy I found that red ball under our old tree.
